Devotional for Friday May 18th

Good Morning Everyone,

Our theme for this month: “Knowing God”

Our Bible verse for today: “Jesus looked at them and said, ‘With man this is impossible, but with God all things are possible.” Matthew 19:26 (CSB)

Our thought for today: “God has the power to accomplish whatever He wills.”

God is all-powerful. The theological term for this is “omnipotent”. The omnipotence of God means that God is able to do whatever He wills in the way in which He wills it. There is nothing God cannot do. Additionally, the sovereignty of God and the omnipotence of God are two of His attributes that go together, they work in tandem. In order to reign supreme over all creation God must have all power. There can be no other person or no other thing in all of creation that has more power than God, or God would not be sovereign over that person or thing. God has all the power there is to have.

This point sometimes confuses people and may even cause doubt. There could appear to be many events in the world that are not under God’s control. The Nazi holocaust would be one. Surely a sovereign and all-powerful God could have and would have prevented that. Likewise, a three year old child dying of leukemia, a fourteen year old girl brutally raped and murdered, and an elderly widow cheated out of her income. If God reigns supreme, and if He does have all the power there is to have, why are such things allowed to happen? This causes people to often wonder if God is really all-powerful.

The question of why a sovereign and all-powerful God would allow evil into His world brings us to issues like the free will of man, the permissive will of God, and the activity of Satan in the world. Those discussions will have to wait for other devotionals. Although some events are determined by God and are brought about by Him regardless of man’s cooperation (or lack of it), most events in history are conditional, and their end result is dependent on the obedience or disobedience of the people involved. But that does not change the truth that God is omnipotent and sovereign.

Even a cursory reading of the Bible clearly establishes God’s omnipotence. Creation itself attests to it and modern scientific discovery continues to prove it. The more we learn about the universe and the astounding complexity of creation the more it points to the omnipotent One who created it all.

God is all-powerful, He is omnipotent. There is no power in the universe that is greater than Him. Spend some time this morning in worship and prayerfully consider His awesome power.

God Bless,

Pastor Jim
