Our Bible verse for today: “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love to a thousand generations of those who love him and keep his commands.” Deuteronomy 7:9 (NIV)
Our thought for today: “God is faithful”
God is faithful. It’s a promise He repeats over and over again all throughout Scripture. There’s no lack of integrity in the thoughts, words, or promises of God. He says what He means, He means what He says, and He does what He promises. God is not hypocritical, He is not inconsistent, and He does not lie. God is faithful and therefore God is dependable.
In Deuteronomy 7:9 Moses tells us that the faithful God keeps His promises for “a thousand” generations. That’s hyperbole. Moses didn’t mean that God’s faithfulness stops with generation number 1001. He meant that it is never ending. In Psalm 119:90 the Psalmist affirms that truth by telling us that God’s faithfulness continues throughout “all” generations.
This truth provides great hope and assurance for us. Not one word of the Bible has been, or ever will be, proven false. It’s all true and faithful. Not one promise of God has ever failed nor will ever fail. Because God is 100% faithful and completely consistent, we can trust Him without question. There is within the very nature of God what theologians refer to as “the divine integrity”. Faithfulness is simply who God is by nature.
God is faithful and therefore consistent, and we are to strive for faithfulness and consistency in our own conduct as well. In Matthew 5:37, in the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus said, “Simply let your Yes be Yes and your No, No.” In other words, God’s words are true and faithful so ours should be too. God’s promises are always true and always fully kept, and therefore ours should be too. The divine integrity of God is the standard of measure for our own conduct. God is faithful and therefore we should be too.
Fortunately, as Paul explains in 2 Timothy 2:13, even when we are not faithful, God continues to be faithful anyway. Our faithfulness should be inspired by His, but His faithfulness is in no way dependant on ours. Good thing too. I fail in my faithfulness to Him more often than I care to admit.
God’s faithfulness is a great gift for us. It means that we can trust Him and depend on Him without question or doubt. Spend some time this morning worshiping Him for His faithfulness.
