Devotional for Tuesday May 22nd

Good Morning Everyone,

Our theme for this month: “Knowing God”

Our Bible verse for today: “Taste and see that the Lord is good; blessed is the man who takes refugee in him.” Psalm 34:8 (NIV)

Our thought for today: “God is good”

In his book “The Knowledge of the Holy” A.W. Tozer observed that the entire outlook of mankind would be radically changed if we would just believe that God is good and that He takes great delight in blessing us. Most people acknowledge the greatness of God, but people often doubt the goodness of God. The world seems too evil, life seems too hard, prayers appear to go unanswered, and so, we doubt.

But God is good! It is His inherent natural goodness which moves Him to lavish us with grace and kindness and mercy and compassion. It is His goodness which causes Him to be so tenderhearted towards us and so sympathetic to our trials, struggles, pains, and heartaches. His goodness is attested to on virtually every page of the Bible. This is a crucial understanding because the goodness of God is foundational to our right thinking about God. Before we will truly begin to understand Him properly we must first fully embrace the truth that He is good.

Funny, we seldom doubt or question the goodness of Jesus, only the goodness of the Father. When we think of the Father we often get images of a stern celestial scorekeeper adding up our mistakes and missteps, counting our sins against us, and preparing to administer discipline. He is the authoritative disciplinarian. But we see Jesus as kind and compassionate. He is full of mercy and goodness. He healed the sick, fed the hungry, spoke words of comfort, and died for our sins. Jesus is good, but the Father, well, maybe we’re not so sure. He seems kind of cold and stern and demanding.

But the Bible tells us that Jesus and the Father are one. Jesus told us in John chapter 14 that if we have seen Him then we have seen the Father. An important part of Jesus’ ministry here on earth was to show us the Father in ways that we could understand and relate to. That’s why we tell people if you want to know God, study Jesus, because Jesus is God and He came to teach us what God is really like.

Make no mistake about it, God is good. He is infinitely good. Goodness is His very nature. A right understanding of God only begins when we accept and embrace His goodness. Spend some time this morning thinking about how good He is and how much He loves you.

God Bless,
Pastor Jim
