|Good Morning Everyone,
Our theme for this month: “Overcoming”
Our Bible verse for today: “Be sober-minded, be alert. Your adversary the devil is prowling around like a roaring lion, looking for anyone he can devour. Resist him, firm in the faith …” 1 Peter 5:8-9 (CSB)
Our thought for today: “Defend the ground of your life by standing firm.”
My wife Linda and I spent this Thanksgiving with our son Tom and daughter-in-law Liz at their home in Maryland. At dinner they told us about a recent camping trip they went on with some friends. Tom and Liz are adventurous and so their camping trip was in a remote part of Pennsylvania, in November, in the snow, in tents. Their campsite was so remote they had to leave the cars behind and hike into it.
They had prepared well for the cold weather. What they had not prepared for were the wolves. In the middle of the cold dark night, out there in the middle of the remote woods, the wolves began circling. As the howling got closer Tom and the other man decided they needed to defend their campsite. So they went out with flashlights and loudly banged pots and pans to chase the wolves away. It worked, and then they took turns standing watch throughout the night in case the wolves came back.
Peter describes a similar scene for us in 1 Peter 5:8-9. In that passage Satan is depicted as a vicious lion, one who prowls around looking for a follower of Jesus he can pick-off and devour. He can’t do anything to take away your salvation, but he can tear you up and hurt you. So Peter tells us we need to be alert, we need to be smart, and we need to be prepared to stand our ground.
The Apostle Paul describes the same reality in a slightly different way in Ephesians 6:10-18. In that passage he explains the reality of spiritual warfare and he teaches us how to properly prepare ourselves so we can fight off the adversary. There Paul teaches us about “the armor of God”. For an in-depth teaching on this passage, including what each part of the armor represents and how we are to use it, you can go to my website at www.JimMersereauBooks.com and download the free article “The Armor of God”.
The point in all of this is that Satan is an adversary. He is like a vicious wild beast prowling around seeking an opportunity to tear us apart, and you do need to be prepared to defend yourself. To borrow a phrase from David Jeremiah in his book “Overcomer”, “You have to be ready to defend the ground of your life by standing firm”.
I encourage you today to remain alert and vigilant. Don’t allow Satan the opportunity to hurt you or your loved ones. Be prepared to defend the ground of your life.
