| Good morning, everyone, Our theme for this month: “Sound doctrine, strong faith” Our Bible verse for today: “For this reason God delivered them over to disgraceful passions. Their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. The men in the same way also left natural relations with women and were inflamed in their lust for one another. Men committed shameless acts with men and received in their own persons the appropriate penalty of their error.” Romans 1:26-27 (CSB) Our thought for today: “This is how bad it can get” The human sex drive is strong – very strong. It drives men and women to do things that should be unthinkable, but which are in fact very common. Sexual passion, expressed in perverted and ungodly ways, has been a problem for humans since the beginning of time. That’s why God gave us clear instructions for our sexual conduct – through Moses in the Old Testament and through Paul in the New Testament, and it is why Jesus affirmed for us that God’s standard is for one man and one woman to be married for life and for sexual passion to be expressed only within the structure of that marriage. How bad can it get if people stray from God’s pure and perfect plan? Moses described it in painful detail in Leviticus 18:6-17: “You are not to come near any close relative for sexual intercourse; I am the Lord. You are not to violate the intimacy that belongs to your father and mother. She is your mother; you must not have sexual intercourse with her. You are not to have sexual intercourse with your sister, either your father’s daughter or your mother’s, whether born at home or born elsewhere. You are not to have sex with her. You are not to have sexual intercourse with your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, for they are your family. You are not to have sexual intercourse with your father’s wife’s daughter, who is adopted by your father; she is your sister. You are not to have sexual intercourse with your father’s sister, she is your father’s close relative. You are not to have sexual intercourse with your mother’s sister, for she is your mother’s close relative. You are not to violate the intimacy that belongs to your father’s brother by approaching his wife to have sexual intercourse; she is your aunt. You are not to have sexual intercourse with your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; you are not to have sex with her. You are not to have sexual intercourse with your brother’s wife; she is your brother’s family. You are not to have sexual intercourse with a woman and her daughter.” And then there’s this: “You are not to sleep with a man as with a woman; it is detestable. You are not to have intercourse with an animal, defiling yourself with it; a woman is not to present herself to an animal to mate with it; it is a perversion.” They had to be told not to have sex with animals?? Yes, they did. That’s how bad it can get and that’s why we must live by God’s standards rather than by our own. If our conduct is governed by our passions, there is no limit to how degraded we can become. God’s standards for sexual conduct are clearly spelled out for us in the Bible and regardless of what our society says, those are the only acceptable standards.
